The populations will become upset with you if the [[tax]] rate is too high or if there is over population.  They may become upset if there are too many [[mines]], [[factories]], or [[defense posts]] due to environmentalist movements.  Over several [[turn]]s the populations of a [[planet]] may become very unhappy.  If they ever become too unhappy they will start a riot or even a civil war. If this happens they will kill each other and destroy your [[mines]], [[factories]] and [[defense posts]]. If a riot starts the [[tax]] rate will be instantly set to 0% to prevent a civil war.

Overview

There are a wide variety of factors that contributes to the happiness of the colonists or natives of a planet. These factors include taxes, population, planetary structures, climate (for colonists), and government (for natives).

The change in happiness for non-Crystalline colonists is as follows, where r is the tax rate, p is the population, m is mines, f is factories, and t is temperature:

The change in happiness for Crystalline colonists is as follows, with letter identification is identical to above:

The change in happiness for natives is as follows, with the above identification, plus g being the government, ranging from Anarchy (1) to Unity (9):

Impact

What impact the happiness will have is dependent on the happiness level after it has been changed. Apply all of the following as appropriate:

  • Below 70 - No growth
  • Below 40 - Rioting: If the colonists are rioting, then they will destroy 10 mines and 8 factories. Likewise, if the natives are rioting, then they will destroy 5 mines and 3 factories.
  • Below 31 - No taxes may be collected. Also applies if below 31 prior to the change. Natives may not be taxed while below 31.
  • Below 0 - Civil war: For each civil war, colonists and natives will kill each other (by 30% plus 100 clans), and destroy 10 mines and 8 factories. There may be two civil wars on the same planet, if both happiness levels are below 0
