The Cobol Research Cruiser is one of the most useful ships in the game. It's ram scoop ability allows it to generate fuel simply by moving through space.
Note that the ability works after movement, so make sure you have enough fuel to travel to where you want to go in the first place. Also the ability does not work if the Cobol is towed.
Bio-Scan
The other useful ability of a Cobol is its bio-scan ability. Using the bio-scan mission, the Cobol will scan for planets with native life within 200 ly (same as sensor sweep range setting). The scanner will scan approximately 20% of the nearby planets within scanner range which you do not own. The bio-scan will tell you the type of natives and their population, plus the planet's temperature.
Planets with 20 defense posts or more will block the bio-scan. Evil Empire planets will send false readings to the bio-scanner, showing those planets as amorphous; Rebel players are not impacted by this EE false sensor info.
